Chapter Ten:

On Their Way

Years ago, Smith’s mother Idris would sit in her workshop, fashioning new toys while Smith would peek over the edge of the table, watching her movements. Idris deftly reached out, grabbed a piece, connected it to another, and then used a screwdriver or some other tool to wind it up.

“What’re you making?” Smith asked.

“Something special for you and others.” Idris said, turning to him. “It’s what I love to do, to make something with my hands, bring it to life, and show it to the world, especially to you.”

“I’d love to do that, too.” Smith told her.

Smith pulled up a chair alongside his mother and she showed him how to assembly a toy, how the parts would fit together. Smith worked hard at it, until finally, the toy was complete and it’d waddle around like a duck.

“You did it.” Idris smiled at him.

“Wow, it’s amazing,” Smith said, staring at his toy.

“You want to make another one?” She asked him.

“Sure.” Smith told her.

So they worked together, side by side, as they brought all of these devices and gadgets to life. Smith learned so much from her and his friend Tinker that he couldn’t thank them enough, yet it all went away so soon.

Smith groaned as he regained consciousness, staring up at a canopy as a tent had been pitched out in a field to shelter them. He sat up and looked around at Dorothy, chatting with Raven, while Crawford was still out of it, only he was human once more with his tawny hair spread out on the pillow he was lying upon.

Dorothy still wore Smith’s ring as she turned to him, smiling. His heart lit up at the sight.

“Smith! Guess what? Drizelda’s gone.” Dorothy told him.

“Really?” Smith said, his eyes widening. “That’s wonderful news.”

Raven told Smith and Dorothy about what happened during the battle, while Crawford slowly recovered and woke up. He opened his amber eyes, astonished at seeing the others here, and then as he rose up, he realized that he was human again, and not a lion.

“Hey! I’m free!” Crawford cried, turning to the others. “I’m back! Was Drizelda defeated? She had me trapped as a lion for all these years, and she wouldn’t change me back, unless something happened to her. Is she gone?”

The others hurriedly told him what happened, while Dorothy and the others hugged him and laughed at being together. Suddenly the tent flap was pushed aside, and they looked up at Glinda and Locasta, walking into the tent.

“It’s good to see you’re all up and about.” Locasta said, nodding her head. “We’ve got some important business to attend to.”

“Dorothy, we want you to have these.” Glinda presented Dorothy with the silver slippers.

“What’re those?” Dorothy said, staring at them.

“They belonged to your father King Pastoria, and all of the other rulers in Oz’s past.” Raven said, gazing upon the shoes in awe before he turned to Dorothy. “They were originally Lurline’s silver slippers, and they contain an awful lot of fairy magic from what I’ve heard.
